The temperature in a car can reach 100°F within 10 minutes on a 80°F day. On a 90°F day, the temperature in a car can reach 160°F in less than 10 minutes. Cracking or partially rolling down the windows has been shown to have little effect on the temperature inside a car.

Pets can suffer brain damage or die from a heatstroke or suffocation in 15 minutes. They can only cool themselves by panting and sweating through their paw pads.

Update on Jerky-related illness

Since 2007, the FDA has received reports of over 3600 pet illnesses which may be related to the consumption of jerky treats. Most of the reported illnesses involve treats that were sourced from China. Of these cases, there were more than 3600 affected dogs, and 10 affected cats; more than 580 of these cases were fatal. Smaller numbers of affected dogs were seen in Canada and Australia as well. The majority of the complaints involve jerky treats made of chicken, but other affected jerky treats included duck, sweet potato, yam, and duck or chicken jerky wrapped around fruit.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Foundation, Leptospirosis is a disease caused by infection with leptospira bacteria. It’s rare, but cats and people can become infected. Infection in humans can result in flu-like symptoms and can cause liver or kidney disease. Most people contract leptospirosis from polluted water when engaging in recreational activities. Infection resulting from contact with an infected pet is possible, but much less common.
