I feel like I was one of the lucky ones that was so passionate about veterinary medicine at such an early age. I can remember having to empty my pockets and whatever critter I had tucked under my shirt before my mom would let me in the house.

My first job was in 1979—in high school—with one of my veterinary mentors. I think I’ve only had one job that wasn’t directly related to veterinary medicine. At vet school—Go Gators!—I worked in the barn for a few years and also in the laboratory. The clinicians and support staff were always trying to challenge us to be the best we could be.

People say we have a disadvantage because our patients can’t talk, but I find that the clients know their pets very well.

At home, we have a small menagerie of children: 3 two-legged children, 4 four-legged children, a salt water fish tank, and an injured parrot that I rescued almost 30 years ago.

Being a veterinarian has truly been a blessing. It’s such a gratifying career. I understand how important our patients are to our clients and the impact that we have by providing a higher level of care. I enjoy being part of helping them live happier and healthier lives. Sometimes I get the feeling that they just know we’re here to help them.
